This group was formed in 1968 when Richie Blackmore (guitar) and Jon Lord (backing vocals and keyboard) were recruited to form a band with former Searchers drummer Chris Curtis. However Curtis decided not to be a part of it after a while and so Blackmore and Lord recruited Rod Evans as vocalist alongside Ian Paice (drums). Blackmore suggested the band name ’Deep Purple’ after a favorite song of his grandma and the band was officially born. In 1968 the group released their debut album ’Shades Of Deep Purple’ including the single ’Hush’ (orignally by Joe South) which peaked at #4 in the US Billboard Single Charts. Their next album ’The Book Of Talieysn’ was released in the same year. Both albums reached the Top 40 of the US Billboard album charts. In 1969 the group released their 3rd studio album ’Deep Purple’ which failed to reach the Top 100 of the USA. All the first 3 albums never charted in their homecountry UK either.
