The Morning Prayer - Pratah Smarami प्रातःकालीन प्रार्थना - प्रातः स्मरामि

Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Sahajayoga Voice : Anjali Kadri This is a prayer composed by Shri AdiShankaracharya consisting of three stanzas (and forth one is Phalashruti) in which the mind (manas), speech (vak), and body (kaya) of the individual are sought to be dedicated to the supreme Spirit. The prayer at dawn is profoundly significant. Dawn symbolizes the inner awakening. Shri Mataji’s speech 27 December 1989 Pune (India) “There’s a beautiful shloka which I had told Mahatmaji that he should put it first, I was a very small girl but he listened to me (Shri Mataji says it in Sanskrit). ‘Early in the morning I pray to that principle in my spirit Which is the truth, the attention, and joy So that I should go to the highest state of my ascent.’ [Prātar-namāmi hṛdi saoṅsphurad-ātma-tattvam, Sachchit-sukham parama-haṅsa-gatim turīyam.] So, opening of the heart is very important for all of us.“ प्रातः स्मरामि हृदि संस्फुरदात्मतत्त्वं सच्चित्सुखं परमहंसगतिं तुरीयम् । यत्स्वप्नजागरसुषुप्तिमवैति नित्यं तद्ब्रह्म निष्कलमहं न च भूतसङ्घः ॥१॥ प्रातर्भजामि मनसा वचसामगम्यं वाचो विभान्ति निखिला यदनुग्रहेण । यन्नेतिनेतिवचनैर्निगमा अवोचं_ स्तं देवदेवमजमच्युतमाहुरग्र्यम् ॥२॥ प्रातर्नमामि तमसः परमर्कवर्णं पूर्णं सनातनपदं पुरुषोत्तमाख्यम् । यस्मिन्निदं जगदशेषमशेषमूर्तौ रज्ज्वां भुजङ्गम इव प्रतिभासितं वै ॥३॥ श्लोकत्रयमिदं पुण्यं लोकत्रयविभूषणम् । प्रातःकाले पठेद्यस्तु स गच्छेत्परमं पदम् ॥४॥ Prātah smarāmi hṛdi saoṅsphurad-ātma-tattvam Sachchit-sukham parama-haṅsa-gatim turīyam | Yat-svapna-jāgara-suṣhuptim-avaiti nityam Tad-Brahma niṣhkalam’aham na cha bhūta-sanghah ||1|| Prātar-bhajāmi Manasā Vachasām’agamyam Vācho vibhānti nikhilā yad’anugraheṇa | Yan-Neti-Neti-vachanair-nigamā Avocham_ stam Deva-Devam-ajam’achyutam-āhur’agryam ||2|| Prātar-namāmi tamasāh param’ārka-varṇam Pūrṇam sanātana-padam Puruṣhottam’ākhyam | Yasminn’idam jagad’asheṣham-asheṣha-mūrtau Rajjvām bhujangama iva pratibhāsitam Vai ||3|| Shloka-trayam’idaṃ puṇyam loka-traya-vibhūṣhaṇam | Prātah-Kāle Paṭhed’yas’tu Sa Gachchhet-Paramam Padam ||4|| Meaning: At dawn I remember (meditate on) the Atma (the divine love) shining within my heart, ...which gives the bliss of Sat-chit-ananda, which is the swan representing supreme consciousness and takes the mind to the state of Turiya (the fourth state, Super-consciousness), which is always acting in the three states of dream, waking and deep sleep, I am that indivisible, detached Brahma that shines; I am not this mind, body, intelligence which is the collection of five elements. At dawn I sing the praise of That which is unattainable by mind and speech, but by the grace of which all words shine, who is expressed in the scriptures by the phrase “Neti Neti“(not this, not this), since He cannot be adequately expressed by words, who is called the God of the Gods, unborn, unchanging and primordial. At dawn I bow to that supreme illumination which is beyond darkness, which is complete, which is the primordial abode, and which is described as Purushottama - the Supreme Purusha, in whom this endless world is settled from the beginning of creation, and it appears like a snake on a rope. This meritorious triad of verses are the ornaments of the three worlds, which unite one with the Whole.
