Made in 1951 by Zeit Im Film, Südwest-Film GmbH, “A Will -- A Way“ is a somewhat typical post-WWII social education film. It focuses on how private initiatives can result in positive change in war torn Germany. Specifically, the film looks at how communities can come together to rebuild cities and villages, and without government help or intervention. Such messages were critical in a nation that had endured such a devastating defeat in 1945. Here, six years later, people are still shown living in ramshackle huts (1:04) and shattered ruins are commonplace (1:00). The end result of democracy in action is a youth center for the many children (12:39) who have nowhere to play or recreate. The kids are put to work as part of the project (12:45).
