When the saying first entered the English language, the word ‘spade’ referred to the garden tool used for digging in the garden. Unfortunately, however, more recently, the word ‘spade’ has been used as a derogatory (insulting) term for Black people. Because of this, you may decide to use an alternative expression, such as ‘tell it like it is’ or ‘give it to me straight’ to convey the same meaning. This is a very interesting article if you’d like to learn more about the evolution of this expression: Interested in joining my English Programmes? Click here: Want to find your perfect tutor?
