The four tracks represent a fresh take on the genre, with each producer merging their own vision together with the sonic legacy of dance floors in their regions. Berlin resident and Sonntagsinstitut Collective founding member Black Mirror Park delivers the intensity that his city is known for with “Identity Theft.” German techno’s signature booming kick drum opens the track, setting the tone before a medley of synth stabs are gradually interwoven. The energy slowly builds up as snares and claps are added into the mix, creating a climactic sensation around a breakdown that delivers an interlude about digital identify theft. Angel Science captures the atmosphere of Alberta’s DIY raves with “Pellegrino,” a track that brings minimalism and subtlety together with a brisk tempo in the mid 140 bpm region. Strobing instrumentation and unwavering stripped-down percussion captures the sensation of intimate rooms where custom built sound systems guide packed floors. Layers of muted samples in the background tie everything together evoking images of a lush, digital forest. NYCO blurs genre lines and crafts a techno anomaly with “Stellar.” Dubby chords wash over deep kicks and crisp hi-hats reminiscent of Detroit techno, creating an entirely unique offering that’s both entrancing and commanding on the dance floor. Clocking in at almost nine minutes long, this track is a hypnotic journey for selectors who like to let tracks breathe. Another mainstay of Alberta’s DIY raves, Befaire pays homage to the foundational elements of dub techno with forward-thinking sound design on “Lost Time.” Dub techno’s signature fleeting chords are given a metallic texture, with each one sounding like warped mechanical signals. Heavy low-end frequencies create a deep underbrush of bass, making this a driving club track primed for big sub stacks.
