In the Norse cosmology, Hel, daughter of Loki, is the goddess of Niflheim, the realm of the underworld. There, she awaits those who die of sickness or old age in a hall called Elijudnir. Do not expect a feast at your arrival nor a lively hearth to warm your bones. Hel’s realm is cold and dreary. Her table is called Hunger and her knife, Starvation. Her world is a shadow realm of our own, filled with pain and struggle for food and warmth.
