The plot of the story: «A charlatan, a dark priest and a murderer» A famous medium named Xandor Shepsalie was given a task by the villagers to solve the case of the missing babies. He had a vision from his patron that he should look for clues in a certain abandoned shelter halfway to the city of Beregost. He hired a priest named Father Mival as his assistant, who worshipped Myrkul, the evil deity of death. But since he was asking for a very small reward, Xandor decided to hire him. On their way to the shelter, they noticed a man standing alone, whose horse had been torn apart by wolves. And since it was still quite a long way to the city, he asked for a ride to the city. But the rain intensified, turning into a thunderstorm. And the cart was completely stuck in the mud. It was impossible to go any further, and the shelter was almost right next door. Therefore, the fellow traveler had to go with a magician and a priest to get out of the rain and rest at least in this place. As it will become clear later, this fellow traveler was Amadeus Gently, a mercenary from greedy Amn, who was traveling to Baldur’s Gate on a personal mission. But it turns out that everything is not so simple with the shelter: it is inhabited by the ghosts of former inhabitants, with whom our characters eventually have to fight. In addition, at some point the priest finds all the missing children in one of the rooms of the orphanage. And they all turn out to be alive. And what is more incomprehensible and mysterious, the uninvited guests discover two teenage girls - Faith and Hope. They say that the culprit is a beautiful woman from the portrait named Auntie Lyubov. She was involved in the terrible things that happened at the orphanage... and only they and the babies they look after were left alive. In the end, after unraveling the tangle of intrigues and secrets, Xandor realizes that in reality the woman in the portrait was a hag, and those girls were her sisters who decided to kidnap babies in order to lure adventurers who could instead deal with the devil, whom they called to serve them. But the ritual, as it became clear, got out of control. However, it all ended with the fact that the mercenaries coped with the task and returned to the city of Beregost, and two of them (the warrior Amadeus and Father Mival) even gained the title of folk heroes.)
