London’s Post Office Railway Mail Rail June 1996

On 7 June 1996 David Kemp took me on a tour of the British Post Office’s (GPO) underground railway facilities (Mail Rail) at Mount Pleasant. This included the loading and unloading of the driverless, 2 foot gauge trains, the computerized and manual control centres, the power switching rooms and the workshops. The railway closed in 2003 but is scheduled to open as a tourist attraction in 2020 using the battery powered locomotives - two of which are seen at Mount Pleasant. Many thanks to David Kemp for his help and hospitality. More information and photographs about Mail Rail are available at Colin Karslake’s web site
