Silent, high speed test film showing the proposed escape system for the S-3A Viking conducted at China Lake Naval Weapon Center in 1971. Some of the film shows a sequenced double ejection; the production aircraft was capable of a four person (the entire crew) near simultaneous ejection (see below). The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a 4-crew, twin-engine turbofan-powered jet aircraft that was used by the U.S. Navy (USN) primarily for anti-submarine warfare. During the production run from 1974 to 1978, a total of 186 S-3As were built. All crew members in the Viking sit on forward-facing, upward-firing Douglas Escapac zero-zero ejection seats.
