The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers on the east bank of the Volga. During the Soviet years, when these photographs were taken, Kuibyshev was a closed city. During the Great Patriotic War, the city was chosen as the alternative capital of the Soviet Union should Moscow fall to the Nazis. An underground war room, known as “Stalin’s Bunker“ was constructed, but was never used.....
