Hey Bargouzeen* stir the waves helping me I’m sailing not far, I’m a brave man. Long as I wore my unbearable chains, Long as I wandered the Akatui* hillsides, My old friend had helped me to flee from the jail, And I came to life feeling freedom. Shilka* and Nerchinsk* don’t frighten me now, Mountain guards couldn’t manage to catch me, Ravenous predators never touched me in woods, A bullet from guards never hit me. I walked at night and amid the bright daylight, Passed by the towns looking tensely around. Rural women have offered me bred, Lads shared me some makhorka*. Glorious sea, sacred Lake of Baikal, Glorious sail, my caftan* full of holes. Hey Bargouzeen* stir the waves helping me, I hear the thunderstorm’s coming. I hear the thunderstorm’s coming. ___________________________________________ * Baikal - a large and deep lake in Siberia that is famous for its chrystal clear water. * Omul fish – a type of fish endemic to Baikal. * Bargouzeen – a type of strong Baikal wind. * Akatui – a settlement in Baikal region where there was a most dreadful hard labor jail in Tsarist Russia. * Shilka – a river in Baikal region and one of two rivers that give birth to large Amur river by their confluence (the second river is Argun); also a settlement under the same name. * Nerchinsk – a town in Baikal region where silver mining industry was developed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the official video channel of the Russian operatic singer Leonid Mikhailovich Kharitonov (bass-baritone).
