I met Hiromi when I started teaching at Berklee College of Music in 2002. I wanted to experiment with new musical ideas and asked around about who the heavy players were and Hiromi’s name kept popping up. She played on a faculty recital of mine and then and asked me and another faculty member to play on a piece on her first record. I said “of course“ and 6 months later I bumped into the other teacher and he said “ do you remember that piano player we recorded with? Her record just went gold in Japan!” And well, the rest is history.
