Soviet Union 1941 (Belarus) ▶ Unternehmen “Barbarossa“ Операция Барбаросса (Part 5/10) Panzergruppe Guderian (July 1941) @GERMANHISTORYARCHIVE Playlist ▶ Part 5: Generaloberst Strauss (Commander 1941) between Vitebsk Viciebsk Віцебск (Belarus) and Smolensk Смоленск (Russia); Pause in combat, Infantry and Tank Troops; Road construction Google Maps: Vitebsk Viciebsk (Belarus) “After a spectacular dash 29th mot infantry division captures Smolensk on 16th July. The following day it captures the industrial area Smolensk north of Dnjeper on 17th july in order to make contact with Hoth 3rd Panzergroup. From 16 to 23th of July it served as an occupation force in Smolensk. Around this time infantry divisions began to arrive in the area (137th Infantry division Gen-Lt Friedrich Bergmann). Which first takes over the occupation duty 25th july . The 29th mot infantry division than moves south east and prepares blocking positions to contain the southwestern part of the forming encircelment of large portions of 16th, 19th, and 20th Sovjet Armies. As the footage shows its the only lucky division of XLVII panzer Corps to get some rest/refitting from 23 july until 28 july. Because russian counterattacks focuses on Hoth in the north, the Yelna saillant (17th panzer, 10th panzer and SS Das Reich) and Gomel/Roslavl area (XXIV panzer corps). Vitebsk was in operational area of 3rd panzergroup of Hermann Hoth. On 8th of July the 20th panzer division Gen-lt Horst Stumpff (part of XXXIX panzer corps of general der panzertruppe Rudolf Schmidt) crossed the western Dvina and captured Vitbesk late on the 10th. So my estimation is that this is around mid july (same time as 29th mot ID captured Smolensk). The tank unit is resting and refitting after being relieved by infantry divisions. And those divisions were only arriving in the Smolensk area by the end of july (around 25th onwards). I personally expected battle footage from Smolensk city itself based on your last video’s covering mostly the 29th mot. infantry division.“ #history #ww2 #Barbarossa #война #Россия #Germany #military #war #simplehistory #tank #Panzer #worldwar2 #historia #Барбаросса
