This song was written by Fedir Shchus himself. Fedir Shchus was a commander (ataman) in Makhno’s revolutionary army. Shchus played one of the most important roles in the history of both the Makhnovist movement and the civil war in general. He became a symbol of rebellion. A cruel, but fair anarchist with a colorful appearance and personality. A man whom peasants loved and respected, and whom his enemies feared for their lives. He was killed in June 1921 near Nedryhailiv in battle with the 8th Cavalry Division of the Red Cossacks.
