When the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in the Summer of 1941, they had with them their revolutionary StuG III, an infantry support vehicle. The Soviets had no such vehicle, and set to work using captured StuGs while they created their own family of support vehicles, both for anti-tank and anti-infantry use.
