China begins drilling one of the world’s deepest holes to explore the Earth’s crust

The hole is located in the hinterlands of the Taklimakan Desert, China’s largest desert. Hailed as a landmark in the country’s deep-earth exploration, the borehole will allow scientists to hunt for new discoveries inside the Earth, as well as seek oil and gas resources.
