4 Ways to Beat a 2-3 Zone Defense Using Ball Screens

These plays will get your team more scoring opportunities and force your opponent out of their 2-3 zone. PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES: PLAY 1 (4 Out, Screen for ’4’) 1 - Swing ball, spot up on weak side, fade toward corner to occupy bottom defender. 2 - Use ball screen, attack top defender, make quick pass. 3 - Set stationary screen. 4 - Post up on ball-side, go under screen from ‘3’ to duck in to open spot. 5 - Set stationary ball screen, pop out. BREAKDOWN: Why this play works - PLAY 2 (Line, Ball Screen for ’2’) 1 - Dribble to a side, swing ball, spot up on wing, be ready to shoot. 2 - Cut hard to top, wait for ball screen from ‘4’, read defense, make play accordingly. 3 - Clear to corner to occupy bottom defender, be ready to shoot or drive. 4 - Set stationary screen. 5 - Post up on middle defender. BREAKDOWN: Why this play works - PLAY 3 (4 Out, Shot for ’3’) 1 - Use ball screen, read defense, make pass accordingly. 2 - Pretend to cut to weak side corner, clear key, cut back to basket. 3 - Spot up on weak side, be ready to shoot. 4 - Spot up in corner, occupy bottom defender. 5 - Set stationary screen on top defender, pop out, be ready to shoot. BREAKDOWN: Why this play works - PLAY 4 (4 Out, Double Screen for ’1’) 1 - Attack middle just after screens set, read middle defender, make play accordingly. 2 - Return pass, set screen on inside of opposite top defender. 3 - Set screen on inside of opposite top defender. 4 - Cut to basket, be ready to score. 5 - Set stationary screen, roll to basket if needed.
