SHOT Show - New for 2016: Senpai, Sturm, Throwing knives series [ENG]. Part 3
More new stuff for 2016 presented at SHOT Show 2016 in Las Vegas, USA:
SENPAI:
Sensei - is a great knife - when you take it in your hand and wave a couple of times, you immediately feel its might and
when you hear how its reliable sheath’s lock clicks securely locking the knife inside, you definitely start wanting to get
one for yourself. However, to some users, used to more compact knives, Sensei’s blade length is an overkill and we were
overwhelmed with requests to give birth to its smaller brother. This is how Senpai was conceived - looks like the older bro,
but with its own special character - the new knife has a different blade design and a more powerful tip giving it a great
piercing capability as well as flat grind ensuring great sharp cuts. Although it comes with a similar sheath and handle, in
behavior and functionality it is now a totally different knife.
STURM:
About the same time when we were developing models suitable for countries where knives with blades longer than 12 cm are
not allowed out of owner’s backyard, we were receiving a lot of requests from special units operators about making a compact
tactical knife - a tough and handy tool that would not take much space on the already overloaded gear. A lot of them used to
buy rather small knives like Urban, but their thin blades designed for cutting performance do not allow performing aggressive
tasks that soldiers often have to do without giving much thought about how not to damage the numerous
consultations and testing we developed Sturm - a powerful knife of small size, but with a thick flat-ground blade and comfortable
Kraton handle. To allow a user to attach the knife where it would be most comfortable we designed a MOLLE-compatible sheath
that allows attaching the knife in a variety of ways on webbing, belts and other gear and even install it at different angles.
THROWING KNIVES
Throwing knives is a separate type of knives with specialized technical requirements. Models presented here were developed and improved to their highest potential over the years by the fathers of the Russian knife throwing school, the most prominent of whom was grandmaster V. S. Kovrov, their original designer. Nothing is insignificant here: grip features and control of the knife, weight, surface finish, heat-treatment, proportions, aerodynamical properties - all these make a genuine throwing knife different from a standard knife. Professional throwing knives do not have thin parts or edges like standard knives have because they break very fast. In addition to this, the throwing knives are hardened at around 42-45 HRC to guarantee they will not break after years of throwing.
