Blockmakers carving a design into a wooden block in a small town north of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
The design is drawn onto paper, then stuck onto a block of teak wood that has been prepared to a smooth flat surface. The bulk of the material is drilled out, then the edges defined with a chisel. The finished design will be used to print fabric. The skill in designing the pattern is in making sure the design can be repeated in all directions.
