Francis and Netanyahu wrangle over language spoken by Jesus

(26 May 2014) A discussion between Pope Francis and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on what language Jesus spoke was captured on camera on Monday as the two met in Jerusalem on the final day of the pontiff’s Middle East tour. Netanyahu said Jesus spoke Hebrew, to which the Pope responded that Christ spoke Aramaic, an ancient Semitic language. “He spoke Aramaic and he also knew Hebrew and the holy books,“ Netanyahu countered. The pope capped his three-day Middle East trip with poignant stops on Monday at some of the holiest and most haunting sites for Jews.
