Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in France (1972)

ITN Archive looks back through our collection to May 1972, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh made a State Visit to France. This report covers the second day of the trip, when the pair took part in a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate those who served in the Second World War and Queen Elizabeth met veterans of the French Resistance. That afternoon, Prince Philip spoke - in French - at a lunch given at the Chamber of Commerce. The Duke spoke of renewed cooperation between Britain and France after a decade of heated exchanges. Indeed, at the time of his speaking, Britain was only months away from joining the European Economic Community (EEC), the predecessor to the European Union (EU). Finally, the day ended with the pair attending a reception at the British Embassy. Buckingham Palace has today announced that King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort will be making a State Visit to France and Germany at the end of March 2023 – the first state visit by the new King since he became monarch. #QueenElizabethII #PrincePhilip #TheQueen #DukeOfEdinburgh #France #Paris #RoyalTour To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - @ITNArchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🎥 Check out our TikTok - @itnarchive1955
