Six french Folk Songs

These are six tunes I remember fondly from the times when we lived in France. These traditional melodies are pure gold. “Ils étaient trois garçons“ (There were three lads“) is a song we used to sing when I was a boy scout (I used to strum along with the guitar). Same with “File la laine“ (“Spin the wool“). “Il est né le divin enfant“ (“He is born the divine child“) is the most popular Christmas carol in France. “A la claire Fontaine“ (At the clear Fountain“) is very short but a jewel of a melody. “Colchiques dans les Prés“ (Colchicums in the fields“) is a haunting melody we sung as scouts. George Brassens, a well known song writter composed the music of “Le petit Cheval blanc“ (“The little white Horse“). The words are by the French poet Paul Fort.
