The outcome of the battle ended French colonial rule in Asia and ushered in America’s later military involvement in the region. Many misconceptions that the French had about their enemy, the Vietnamese, led to the crushing defeat at Dien Bien Phu, and these misconceptions plagued the Americans too during their military involvement.
