Ironman Ivan Stewart’s Super Off-Road (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Tradewest’s license-based 1991 racing game for the NES, Ironman Ivan Stewart’s Super Off-Road.
This video shows a full single-player run through all ninety-nine races.
Ironman Ivan Stewart’s Super Off-Road is a Rare-produced conversion of Leland’s popular 1989 arcade game. How many of you guys remember those wide cabinets with the three steering wheels mounted across the front?
It’s a top-down racing game in which three racers zoom around single-screen tracks in their upgradeable 4x4 trucks. It feels a lot like Super Sprint, R.C. Pro-Am, and Micro Machines in that it’s simple, fast paced, and a whole lot of fun.
The NES version, produced by Rare, does an excellent job of reproducing the frantic appeal of the original. The graphics and sound obviously had to be trimmed back for the 8-bit hardware, but the controls are spot-on and all of the races from the arcade game are here. Even better, the NES version bumps the max player count from three to four provided you have a multitap and enough controllers.
Unexpected though it may be, the NES version is right about on par with the SNES version ( ), and it makes for one of the best multi-player arcade-like experiences you’ll find on the NES.
The word “classic“ tends to get thrown around a lot, but Off-Road is one of those rare games that completely deserve the label, and Rare did the original justice with this stellar NES cart.
