From the original Yo Soy Betty, La Fea [1999] (I am Betty, The Ugly One) to the most recent version Betty in New York [2019] after 20 years and dozens of adaptations, Armando is the main character according to Betty’s eyes. In all versions we find an immature ’Don Armando’ who falls in love with his assistant. Some of them are funnier, others more affectionate, but what attracts me most from the original version is the strength of the character’s transformation. In YSBLF, we find the essence of the real Don Armando. A character full of defects: irresponsible, proud, conqueror and aggressive, with an indomitable temper. At first Armando is not a pleasant character, but Betty saw something in his heart. Armando’s feelings and attitudes are very intense and mysterious. There is a lot of speculation about when exactly Armando fell in love with Betty: if after the first night, the second night, during Betty’s rants or even before all that. Even Armando doesn’t have this answer, because he didn’t know what it was like to really love someone. I think it was a long process, Armando saw Beatriz from the beginning as his “guardian angel“ and considered Betty the person he trusted the most. From this feeling of trust and a certain dependence on Betty, his first feeling was born, not confronted by him. This was not yet love; his pride and prejudice blinded him. However, even finding excuses and reasons, Armando could not tame his feelings for Betty. The transformation of his personality takes place in a time lapse between the confession of his love for Betty and the loss of his hopes of retrieving her.
