Rotavirus | Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus that is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children. There are several risk factors for getting rotavirus infection including being an unimmunized young child and being immunocompromised. The pathophysiology of rotavirus infections involves several mechanisms (including decreasing activity of brush border enzymes), which we discuss in more detail in this lesson.
