When these photographs were taken, the city, now the capital of Belarus, was part of the Soviet Union... The 1930s saw great change in Minsk as the city experienced rapid development with many factories being built, together with new schools, higher education establishments, hospitals, theatres and cinemas.... Also during this time, Minsk became the centre for the development of the Belarusian language and culture.
