Newcastle v Portsmouth, 25th April 1992, Division 2

Brief highlights of arguably the biggest match in Newcastle United’s history - Portsmouth at home on the penultimate weekend of the 1991-92 season. Having lost their previous 5 games, United were 3rd from bottom and facing relegation to the 3rd Division (renamed the 2nd the the 1992-93 season) if they failed to pick up any points in their remaining 2 games. That wouldn’t be easy against a Portsmouth side who were still in with a shout of a Play Off place and had recently took Liverpool to a penalty shoot out in the FA Cup Semi Final Replay. What followed will go down in history and make a legend of a striker who played his part in turning the club around in more ways than one.
