This Bird (Sky High) – 23:22 Personnel: Jim Beach — lead vocals Don Swanson — lead guitar Curt Swanson — percussion Victor Hemme — bass guitar Robert Meinel — rhythm guitar The only album from the Los Angeles band, released by the Angelus label in an edition of 200 copies, so the original is worth a fortune. The group consisted of musicians who came from the working class. The lineup included Jim Beach (vocals), Don Swanson (guitar), Curt Swanson (drums), Victor Hemme (bass) and Robert Meinel (rhythm guitar). Jim Beach describes the band’s early days: “The guys met through mutual friends we had in Los Angeles. Each of us had played in bands before, but were looking for something more energetic and real. We had a small studio in an industrial area in North Hollywood where we would sometimes start rehearsing at half past five in the morning. Everyone had work during the day, so we did what we could.” Surprisingly, the recording session proceeded at the same pace. As Jim Beach further recalls: “The Moon Blood album was recorded at Whitney’s Studio in Glendale in early 1971. Due to a meager budget, all songs were recorded in less than two hours, each in one take. We played everything at once, all five of us - without any studio effects, overdubs or additional sound processing. Everything you hear on the record was recorded pretty much the same way it was done in the old days.” These meager memories in no way describe the emotional intensity captured on film. The first thing the listener notices is the voice of Jim Beach, with its deep baritone evoking the spirit of Jim Morrison, emitting the roars of a wounded animal. It’s interesting that quotes from the Doors album L.A. Woman appear on Moon Blood. True, Jim Beach calls “Love” his favorite Los Angeles band, not “Doors”. Fraction recorded two more albums that remained unreleased.
