Edward Elgar - Sospiri, for cello, harp and strings | Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Initially, Elgar composed this piece as a counterpart to “Salut d’Amour,“ which he wrote in 1888. He therefore called his composition “Soupir d’Amour“ (Sigh of Love). However, while he was composing, World War I was about to start and the impending doom inspired him to adjust the piece into a more sincere and somber adagio. Because of this he changed the work’s title into the Italian word ’Sospiri’, meaning ’sighs’.
