When the Devil Made the Earth | The Story of Fârtat and Nefârtat

It is said in Romanian folklore that the Earth was created by two primordial beings, Fârtat and Nefârtat. Christianity has later named them God and the Devil. But peeling back this added layer reveals the prehistoric origins of this creation myth and the ancient cosmogonic model it was built upon. This intriguing story is not confined to Romanian folklore alone, but finds its place in the rich tapestry of folklore across Eastern Europe, from Aromanian and Slavic Macedonian stories to creation myths found in Hungary, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Russia. My dear friend and specialist in Indo-European mythology @Crecganford has made a video comparing these variants and analyzing their origins. You can watch it here: And if you want to know how the Devil evolved from an earth-diver in the creation myth to a diabolical trickster in magico-religious thought, watch my other video: 🎬 CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction 01:25 The Creation of the Earth 06:56 Dualistic Cosmology 11:40 The Earth-Diver Demiurge 15:04 Deus Otiosus 🎧 ORGANIC LIMINAL SOUND FIDELITY 🌬️ CONNECT WITH ME Instagram: Linktree: 📚 READING LIST Patterns in Comparative Religion, Mircea Eliade Myth and Reality, Mircea Eliade Romanian Folklore and Its Archaic Heritage: A Cultural and Linguistic Comparative Study, Ana R.
