Duduk is an instrument that seems to belong to the Armenian musical culture. We can see that it goes together with the organ perfectly and is able to perform not only the folk music of its homeland, but also academic and even sacred music – not only Armenian, but Western music as well. We are now witnessing a musical dialogue between Armenia and the West: remarkable pieces of the Western sacred music including the medieval Gregorian chant and the protestant choral, coloured by Bach and by other representatives of the German Baroque, are combined with masterpieces of the Armenian music: a tune composed in the 7th century by Anania of Shirak, fragments of Makar Ekmalian’s Liturgy (nearly the most popular piece in the Armenian liturgical tradition) and compositions by archimandrite Komitas who is the honour of the Armenian musical culture.
