Gary A. Rendsburg. Древнееврейский и иероглифический египетский: контакт сквозь века

The Polis Institute Presented a Free Lecture by Dr. Prof. Gary A. Rendsburg. First lecture of the series “Polis Interdisciplinary Colloquium: Souls and Sounds of the City“. Title of the lecture: Ancient Hebrew and Hieroglyphic Egyptian: Contact through the Ages. Israel/Canaan and Egypt were interconnected for most of the 2nd millennium BCE, and indeed into the 1st millennium BCE, notwithstanding the relatively empty space of the Sinai peninsula separating the two geographically. During this period hundreds of Canaanite words entered the Egyptian language, while dozens of Egyptian words entered the Hebrew language. The lecture will focus on these lexical items, but will also widen the lens to discuss literary style and literary motifs shared by the two cultures. GARY A. RENDSBURG serves as the Blanche and Irving Laurie Chair in Jewish History and holds the rank of Distinguished Professor in the Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. He is the author of seven books and more than 200 articles. His most recent book entitled, How the Bible Is Written (Hendrickson, 2019), pays particular attention to the use of language to create literature. He also has done extensive research on medieval Hebrew manuscripts at leading libraries, including the Bodleian Library in Oxford, the Cambridge University Library, the Vatican Library, Fisher Library in Sydney, and the Library of Congress in Washington.
