Niger has authorized Mali and Burkina Faso’s armed forces to intervene on Nigerien territory in case of attack. The move is seen as Niger’s junta trying to keep the West-backed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at bay. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron on August 24 called for a return to democratic order in Niger and demanded Bazoum’s release.
