And here is the original text: - - - - - - - In 2000, I received a call from TV producer, Andreas Ibohm, at UR-Akademin with a request to teach drums on national TV. Requests to perform this kind of music on national TV are not normal, so this was a big surprise to me. But I wasn’t completely sure I wanted to do it. The programs on this channel were usually ”packaged“ in an environment that I doubted would suit me. But Andreas told me that I could decide the content of the programs, which was even more surprising. I told Andreas that I learned how to play drums mainly just from listening to great albums. If they would agree to let me mainly perform music in these shows and not talk too much, then I could see a good reason to do the programs. My idea was to have Mats/Morgan Band in the studio and then bring in some cool guests, such as my brother Jimmy, Spoonman, Fredrik Thordendal (of Meshuggah). Each program could have a shorter part where I would show some exercises, and at the end, I could show some of my favorite albums. What else do you need? Andreas said OK to all this. When the programs went on air, I received feedback from people who weren’t musicians or drummers at all, saying ”Wow, cool music, where can I find this type of music?” or ”Hey, I work at Volvo cars and know nothing about music, but this made my day thank you.” Etc. I also got one or two complaints regarding the parts where I showed exercises. And I can understand that, too. The exercises were quite difficult and not explained very clearly, I guess. I wasn’t at all used to having a camera in my face either, but I think some things are better just experienced, rather than explained. No theory or fact can beat the mental state of being inspired from a great record or concert. When I was 10 years old, I heard Buddy Rich play for the first time. Nobody told me how he did it all, but I spent the next couple of years trying to imitate Buddy. This was an important phase for me. I’m happy I didn’t stop myself from trying just because I didn’t know how he did it. So I hope these TV shows, including the exercises, can be inspiring in the same way, to a beginner or pro. My main goal was to perform music that usually never gets time on radio or TV. I will never forget the first day at the TV studio when they started to shoot all the vinyl covers that I brought. Imagine being in a big national TV studio with walls filled with TV screens all showing the record covers of Captain Beefheart, Magma, Univers Zero, Zappa & co. I don’t think that will ever happen again but it did happen here. The shows were recorded before there was HD resolution available but I transferred the material from the beta original masters to get the best result. Hope you like it! - And as Bill Bruford said, “When in doubt, roll!”
