War in Ukraine: Is Belarus a co-aggressor?

Belarus, under the authoritarian regime of Alexander Lukashenko, has been used as a strategic base for Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. Despite pervasive propaganda, a great number of Belarusian citizens have chosen to support Ukraine’s struggle for independence and sovereignty. More than a thousand Belarusians have volunteered as combatants on Ukraine’s side, many more provided humanitarian aid and engaged in protests against Russia’s criminal actions. Belarusians have been disrupting equipment on Belarusian railways to impede the transportation of Russian weapons, carried out a drone attack on a Russian military aircraft and actively participated in the information war. At least 1,630 Belarusians have been detained for their anti-war activities and statements. Tragically, more than 40 Belarusians have lost their lives fighting for Ukraine. The democratic forces of Belarus in exile are doing everything they can to convey to the world that the despicable actions of the illegitimate ruler do not reflect the will of the Belarusian people. Our short film captures the complex dynamics and the anti-war efforts of Belarusians. Going forward, Ukraine will need an independent and democratic Belarus as an ally in its struggle against external threats. By working together, these Belarus and Ukraine can play a pivotal role in fostering stability in Europe.
