Spartanburg South Carolina and automobiles today may draw the association of the BMW factory, but back in the day this place was home to just as many NASCAR legends as Charlotte. Iconic race cars were built here like the factory Ford and Mercury teams of Bud Moore Engineering and the Dodge Daytonas of Bobby Allison and Buddy Baker. This was the personal home of Pearson, Bud Moore, Cotton Owens, Mario Rossi, Buck Baker, James Hylton, Rex White, Clements Racing, and many others. We met up with local historian and author Perry Allen Wood to take us around town to see all of the forms race shops and significant locations that are still standing (and some that aren’t) like the abandoned racetrack at the Piedmont Interstate Fairgrounds.
