Russia, China, and the Russian Chinese - The Odyssey

Episode One - The Odyssey (1851-1937) Before World War ii was over, more than 500,000 Russians and Russian-speaking communities lived in China. They existed for some seventy years, an insignificantly short period in the history of any city, even shorter than a human lifespan, and is, at first glance, inadequate for the formation of certain stable traditions and everything that people call the character and soul of a community. But talk with any China-born Russians, and you will see that China remains forever in their hearts, for better or for worse. This is a story of railways, colonies, international settlements, wars of all kinds, the rivalry between the two largest communist countries, boats, paintings, churches, bread, a musician’s journey crossing the entire Chinese plain, and the lives of the ordinary people who lived through it. On this journey, we will take a walk in the streets of old Beijing or Peiping, old Manchuria, Manchukuo, old Xinjiang, British and French concessions in Shanghai, British and Japanese Hong Kong, a small island in the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and California. Episodes two and three are coming up.
