No ceasefire in Gaza until hostages held by Hamas are freed: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that Israel would not agree to any temporary ceasefire with Hamas until the more than 240 taken hostage during the Oct. 7 attack were freed. “Israel refuses a temporary ceasefire that does not include the return of our hostages,” he said in a televised address. Israel imposed a near-total siege on the Gaza strip and bombarded the densely-populated enclave, home to 2.3 million Palestinians, after Hamas fighters launched a surprise assault last month that killed 1,400 people. Netanyahu also spoke of his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was in Israel on Friday to call for a humanitarian pause that would allow time to boost aid and facilitate the release of hostages.
